The existing Veterans Memorial Bridge was built in 1954 to connect Portland’s West End to South Portland over the Fore River. While still safe for use, it is quickly deteriorating and MaineDOT has made it a priority to replace the bridge.
Construction Time Frame
After months of public meetings to solicit input on certain design elements of the bridge, construction of the new bridge, in the vicinity of the existing bridge, began in June, 2010. Disruptions of traffic has been kept to a minimum and construction continues to be on schedule.
The new bridge which includes a bicycle/pedestrian pathway as well as green spaces is designed to last 100 years. Construction will be completed by the summer of 2012 and demolition of the old bridge will be completed by December, 2012.
