Since the end of last year, the primary focus on construction has been placing curb, zip strip, retaining wall, and erecting steel for the PARB Bridge. Over 1000 ft. of curb and zip strip has been installed.
On the South Portland end, crews have been working on placing sections of retaining wall with 2 of the 8 complete. They are also working on sheet piling so that crews can continue to drive pile for the remainder of the bridge footing.
On the Pan Am Railroad Bridge (PARB), the construction crews have been erecting steel beams while bolting the last splice. There has also been some excavation on the South Portland end for the retaining wall, backfilling the PARB Abutment 2 and completing the mechanically stabilized earth wall on the Abutment 2 side of PARB.
With regards to electrical work, the crew has been focused on running conduit through the inside of the bridge and street, as well as installing junction boxes for street and accent lights.
If you are traveling southbound on the existing Veterans Memorial Bridge, please note we will continue to impose an occasional one-lane closure. This closure will improve safety for both the traveling public and the workers while construction continues. MaineDOT reminds all motorists to continue to drive safely through the work zone and obey the posted speed limit of 35mph. Violations committed within work zones shall be subject to double the fine amount.
